Shiatsu is a Japanese form of acupressure therapy that promotes healing by correcting energy imbalances in the body. Mostly thumb pressure is used on specific points. Shiatsu is based on the same principles as acupuncture, tai chi, and other forms of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

According to TCM, illness is caused by imbalances in the body's flow of energy or "qi" in Chinese, "ki" in Japanese. Ki/energy can accumulate and become trapped in trigger points along meridians in the body. The Japanese refer to these points as "tsubo."

Shiatsu acupressure therapy focuses on releasing blocked points so that the body's energy can flow freely, restoring balance and health.
